Description
Katalonia is a very early table grape from private breeding in Ukraine, credited to the amateur breeder A. V. Burdak, who crossed Talisman with Krainov's Bordovaya Mantiya. It ripens from late July to early August in southern Russia, among the first grapes of the season. The large, conical bunches are usually loose, and the elongated oval to spindle-shaped berries are dark red-violet to almost black, with meaty, juicy flesh, a firm, edible skin and a harmonious taste without muscat.
Characteristics
Dark red-violet to black table grape; very early ripening (late July to early August in the south); large, conical, mostly loose bunches of about 500 to 1,000 g; elongated oval or spindle-shaped berries of about 10 g; meaty, juicy flesh; firm, edible skin; harmonious taste without muscat; vigorous; bisexual flowers; high yields; late wood ripening; moderate disease resistance
Growing Tips
Katalonia's canes ripen late, especially on young vines, so avoid nitrogen in the first year, water little from August and keep side shoots pinched so the wood matures before winter. Do not overload young vines: leave only one or two trial bunches in the second year. Disease resistance is moderate, and the vine needs winter cover where frosts go below about −23 °C.
