Bananas grape cluster
Berry Color: green-yellow
Best Use: Fresh eating
Origin: Ukraine
Harvest Season: late August

Description

Bananas is a yellow table grape from private breeding in Ukraine, bred by the amateur breeder O. M. Pisanka from Podarok Zaporozhyu × Veles. It takes its name from its long, pointed berries, which turn the bright yellow of a ripe banana, although on the vine the banana shape is often less striking than the name suggests. The large, loose bunches carry berries with crunchy, meaty flesh and a strong muscat flavour. It ripens early, from about the middle of August.

Characteristics

Yellow table grape; early ripening (mid to late August); large, elongated, cylindrical-conical bunches of about 600 to 800 g, loose to medium-dense; elongated oval to spindle-shaped berries with a pointed tip, about 10 to 12 g; crunchy, meaty flesh; strong muscat flavour; vigorous; high yields; functionally female flowers; moderate disease resistance

Growing Tips

Bananas grows very strongly, so plan regular shoot thinning and summer pruning to keep the canopy open. Its flowers are functionally female, so plant it near another variety that flowers at the same time; poor pollination leaves bunches with berries of mixed sizes. It crops heavily, so remove surplus bunches early, and cover the vine in winter where frosts are hard.
