Puma grape cluster
Berry Color: blue-black
Best Use: Fresh eating
Origin: Ukraine
Harvest Season: mid to late August

Description

Puma is a black table grape from Transcarpathia in western Ukraine, bred by Sándor Bücs, a grape grower and breeder from the Hungarian village of Csepe (Chepa) who kept a collection of some 300 varieties under plastic and bred several of his own. In our planting it grows fast and carries small, loose bunches of very large, very dark berries with a pleasantly crunchy bite. It ripens in mid to late August. No published description or parentage has been found, so the details here describe the vines we grow.

Characteristics

Black table grape; bred by Sándor Bücs (Transcarpathia, Ukraine); seeded; small, loose bunches; very large berries; very dark skin; crunchy flesh; ripens mid to late August; fast-growing; average disease resistance (grower observation)

Growing Tips

Puma grows quickly, so give it a sturdy support and thin shoots early in the season to keep air moving through the canopy. Its disease resistance has been average in our planting, so follow a normal spray routine in wet seasons. These tips are first-hand observations from our own vines, as no breeder description has been published.
