Description
Jubilej Novocherkasska, the 'Novocherkassk Jubilee', is a pink table grape bred by the amateur breeder Viktor Krainov in Novocherkassk, southern Russia. The Potapenko viticulture institute took it through state testing with him as co-author: it was patented in 2016 and is in Russia's state register for garden use in all regions. Its parents are not known for certain, though Talisman × Kishmish Luchistyi is usually given. It ripens very early and is grown for its huge bunches of very large, elongated berries that range from whitish pink in the shade to bright pink in the sun.
Characteristics
Pink table grape; very early ripening (early to mid-August at Novocherkassk); very large conical to cylindrical-conical bunches, on average about 800 g and up to about 1.7 kg; very large elongated oval berries of about 11 to 14 g; meaty, juicy flesh; harmonious taste without muscat; skin hardly noticeable when eaten; 2 to 3 seeds; bisexual flowers; very high yields
Growing Tips
Jubilej Novocherkasska often sets a second crop on side shoots, which ripens weeks later and is of poorer quality, so remove it on a fully loaded vine. Its resistance to downy and powdery mildew is only moderate, so keep up protective sprays in warm, humid spells. Growers usually prune it long, and the vine needs winter cover where frosts are hard.
