Harvest Season: August

Description

Scarlet Royal is a red seedless table grape from the USDA Agricultural Research Service breeding programme in Fresno, California, bred by David Ramming and Ronald Tarailo from a 1992 cross and released in 2006. It ripens in mid-August in the San Joaquin Valley, alongside Ruby Seedless. The oval, dark red berries are large (about 5.8 g), firm and meaty with a thick skin, and they hold tightly to the stem, carried in large, conical bunches.

Characteristics

Dark red seedless table grape; large oval berries about 5.8 g; firm, meaty flesh; thick skin; large conical bunches; ripens mid-August in Fresno; little shatter

Growing Tips

Scarlet Royal was bred to fill the mid-August gap for red seedless grapes in California and colours well there, so it suits warm, long-season climates. The bunches are big (often over 800 g), so thin to a sensible number per vine to help them colour and ripen. It is a patented variety, so buy vines only from licensed sources.
