Harvest Season: October - November

Description

Crimson Seedless is a late red seedless table grape from the USDA breeding programme at Fresno, California, bred by David Ramming and Ronald Tarailo. It was released in 1989 and has Emperor as one parent. The berries are about the size and shape of Thompson Seedless and turn bright red to crimson. They are firm and crisp with excellent flavour. It ripens from mid-September and, given dry weather, can hang on the vine into November.

Characteristics

Red seedless table grape; berries similar in size and shape to Thompson Seedless; firm, crisp texture; late ripening; holds well on the vine; very vigorous; colour development depends on sunlight

Growing Tips

Crimson Seedless grows very vigorously, especially on deep, fertile soil, so go easy on nitrogen and water. The bunches need good sun exposure to colour, so remove basal leaves and keep the canopy open. Avoid gibberellin sizing sprays and trunk girdles at berry set: both make the fruit colour poorly. Commercial growers rely on ethephon for colour, and a home grower should expect some green berries in shaded bunches.
