Harvest Season: September

Description

Malaga, or White Malaga, is an old white table grape grown for eating rather than for wine. The registers disagree on what it is: the University of California's Foundation Plant Services lists Malaga with France as its origin and gives White Malaga, Panse de Roquevaire and Dabouki as synonyms, while the international Vitis catalogue files the names Malaga, White Malaga and Panse de Roquevaire under the Spanish variety Beba. The name has also been used for Muscat of Alexandria (Moscatel de Málaga), and Red Malaga is a separate red-skinned grape.

Characteristics

White table grape; old Mediterranean variety; grown mainly for eating fresh; the name covers more than one variety

Growing Tips

Reliable growing notes for Malaga itself are scarce, so treat it like other warm-climate European table grapes: plant it in full sun with good air movement, and use a grafted vine where phylloxera is present. Check the label carefully when buying, because Red Malaga is a different grape and Muscat of Alexandria has also been sold under Malaga names.
