Description
Turán is a red-fleshed (teinturier) black grape bred in Eger in 1964 by József Csizmazia and László Bereznai. Its parents are Bikavér 8, a teinturier × Kadarka cross, and Gárdonyi Géza. It was approved in 1985. Its very deeply coloured juice makes it useful in Egri Bikavér blends, where it may make up no more than 10 percent. In the Mátra hills it is also bottled on its own. Its wines are purple when young, with ripe fruit and soft tannins.
Characteristics
Black (blue-black) wine grape with coloured juice (teinturier); early ripening (early September); medium, shouldered, compact bunches; small round berries with bloom; thin skin; juicy, sweet flesh with fresh acidity; very rich in colour; moderate vigour; moderate yields; frost-sensitive; needs careful protection against fungal disease
Growing Tips
Turán is frost-sensitive, so plant it on a sunny south slope away from frost pockets, ideally in deep soil that holds water well. It crops satisfactorily on long-cane pruning. Downy mildew, powdery mildew and black rot all attack it, so keep to a careful spray programme. Left on the vine after ripening, the berries shrivel and concentrate sugar quickly.
