Description

Denisovskij (Denisovsky) is a Russian black wine grape from the Potapenko All-Russian Research Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking in Novocherkassk. It was bred from the northern variety Severny pollinated with a mix of muscat pollen, and it entered Russia's state register in 2006 for the North Caucasus region. The bunches are medium-sized and the small, round, black berries have juicy flesh and a simple taste. It is used for dry, sparkling and dessert wines.

Characteristics

Black wine grape; seeded; interspecific hybrid of Severny × a muscat pollen mix; medium cylindrical-conical bunches of about 200 g; small round berries of about 2 g; juicy flesh; simple taste; early to mid-season ripening; vigorous; good winter hardiness (to about −26 °C); increased resistance to downy mildew; moderate resistance to powdery mildew

Growing Tips

Denisovskij was bred for winter hardiness and fungal resistance, and the Russian state register rates both above average, so it suits colder sites. Downy mildew is rarely a problem, but powdery mildew still needs watching. Because it ripens early, it usually escapes autumn rot. Growers recommend pruning the fruiting canes to six or seven buds.
