Berry Color: green-yellow
Best Use: Wine
Origin: Greece
Harvest Season: August - September

Description

Assyrtiko is the great white grape of Santorini and has since spread to most Greek wine regions. Its berries have thick, tannin-rich skins and keep their acidity remarkably well even in hot, dry summers. That is why it makes taut, mineral, citrusy dry whites that age well, as well as sweet wines from sun-dried grapes. The vine is vigorous, crops moderately and ripens late.

Characteristics

White wine grape; medium, compact bunches; medium berries with thick, tannic skins; seeded; vigorous; moderate yields; late ripening; keeps high acidity when ripe; tolerant of drought, heat and wind

Growing Tips

Assyrtiko suits hot, dry, windy sites where many whites lose their freshness. It can be spur-pruned as a bush vine or cordon, or cane-pruned on a simple Guyot. Watch for grapevine moth, which it is sensitive to; otherwise it is not especially disease-prone. Allow for its late harvest when choosing a site.
